The first Peugeot 206 models were launched in 1998 and for the era it was a very modern looking car. The first engines included a number of petrol units which were 1.1 litre, 1.4 litre, and 1.6 litre along with a rather basic and not very powerful 1.9 litre diesel engine. This was later replaced by a much more refined common rail HDi version. During 1999 a new model 206 was introduce, the GTi. This used a new engine, a 2.0 litre petrol unit that developed 160 bhp though it was modified in 2003 to develop to 180 bhp. This retuned engine and gave the car a top speed of 137 mph along with a 0 to 62 mph acceleration time of 7.4 seconds. During 2001 the iconic Peugeot 206 Coupe Cabriolet was launched. This highly innovative car featured a folding metal roof and set a new trend in open top hatchbacks. In the same year Peugeot launched an estate version of the standard hatchback.
